Reciting the Quran in a beautiful voice is extremely important in
Islam. One should read the Quran with Tarteel, this according to Ibn
Kathir who wrote a famous commentary of the Quran back in the thirteenth
century is to "recite the Quran slowly, making the letters clear, for
this is an assistance in understanding and pondering the meaning of the
Quran." In Arabic the word Tarteel translates as "slow, measured
rhythmic tones". The Quran is supposed to be recited in the same manner
as the way the Angel Gabriel revealed it to the Prophet Muhammad.
Another
common word that one comes across when looking at the way the Quran
should be recited, is Tajweed. This means reading the Quran with correct
pronunciation and has to be learnt under a qualified teacher so that
all mistakes can be rectified. Learning proper Tajweed takes a long time
and needs to be perfected. All Muslims are required to learn the
Tajweed rules of reciting the Quran, as reciting in an incorrect manner
will result in the meaning to become distorted
Muslims put much
value to the one who recites the Quran in a beautiful voice with Tarteel
& Tajweed, one of the greatest and most popular recitation of all
time is by Qari Abdul Basit Abdus Samad. The title Qari is for someone
who recites the Quran with the proper rules of recitation, this title is
achieved by vigorous and sometimes lengthy courses specifically
designed to teach the rules of Quran recitation. There are approximately
twenty scholars of Islam who are extremely popular amongst the Muslims
because of their beautiful voice and the manner in which they recite the
