The religion of Islam being the complete code of life strongly
supports the concept of human welfare and urges that a Muslim should
reflect accordingly. Islam motivates its followers to contribute
positively towards their social setup and not get indulged in any
mischievous or harmful activity that is in way threatening or
obstructive. The noblest teachings of this beautiful religion quite
comprehensively explain about the rights of every individual in the
society while defining about the obligations and duties a Muslim needs
to perform in almost every sphere of life. The main theme on which Islam
is based is "Virtue" or good deeds. It clearly identifies the core
values a believer must adopt and adhere to, in order to create and
nurture a peace and serene environment. Let's know about these core
values Islam stresses upon to get eternal reward alongside contributing
positively towards societal amity and prosperity.
- The Belief in One God Unites the Entire Society
As
we go back in the Islamic era, when Roman and Greek empires enjoyed a
prosperous rule, most of the civilizations believed in more than one
god. They had separate gods for different affairs. It did not allow
those civilizations to unite and they scattered apart with the passage
of time. The concept of one God keeps the Muslims united. It ties the
Muslims regardless of the geographical boundaries. I admit that today
there are more than fifty Muslim countries in the world, but still they
lack unity. There is a strong need of connecting to each other with the
help of the true spirit of Islam. I am a Muslim and I am proud to be a
Muslim but I still admit that we are not following the teachings of
Islam with the full effect.
- Service to Mankind
Among
the basic teachings of Islam is also included the service towards
mankind. Regardless of the religious beliefs of others; Islam stresses
that all Muslims should respect the human spirit. Muslim society must
respect the rights of each and every person. The Islamic doctrine allows
freedom to the minorities as well to practice their religious
obligations without any fear. The rulers or the leaders in the Islamic
state are bound to do nothing but serve humanity as they will be
accountable in the Supreme Court of Allah Almighty on the Day of
Judgment regarding their people. The great second Caliph of Islam Umar
(Radi ALLAHU Anho)'s life history strongly signifies this point.
- Equality and Justice
Islam
does not discriminate people from one another. Islamic society is bound
to exercise complete equality. There should be no difference between
the rich and the poor, black and the white except on account of piety as
clearly stated by the beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of
Allah be upon him) in the Last Sermon. According to Islamic teachings,
tribes are just for the purpose of identification. No one is superior to
the other. Allah will treat everyone on the basis of justice, on the
day of the judgment whether he is Muslim or non-Muslim.
"Beware!
Whoever is cruel and hard on a non-Muslim minority, or curtails their
rights, or burdens them with more than they can bear, or takes anything
from them against their free will; I (Prophet Muhammad) will complain
against the person on the Day of Judgment." (Abu Dawud)
Justice
is what makes the Islamic society different from the other dynasties.
Unfortunately, today Muslim countries are not exercising justice in the
real spirit, but the real teachings of Islam emphasize on the importance
of justice. Caliph Umar (Radi ALLAHU Anho) is best known for the true
implementation of justice. That is why most of the European courtiers
still follow the "Omar Laws".
- Man is the Central Figure in Islamic Culture
Islamic
teachings tell us about the importance of human being. Islam focuses on
the public welfare. The concept of Zakat far above than today's concept
of taxation was introduced to help the needy and the poor. There was a
time during the reign of Caliph Umar (Radi ALLAHU Anho) when there was a
huge majority of Zakat payers, and there were not enough needy or poor
people. This prosperity was achieved within a less period of time and it
was a remarkable achievement at that time.
- Respect for Women
Islam,
for the first time in the history of mankind, introduced the rights of
inheritance for the women. Islam has a huge regard for the respectful
behavior towards women. It was a remarkable step towards the prosperity
of women in the society. Islam orders the parents to stop burying their
girls alive. Islam prohibits the forced marriage against the will of the
girl. The ranks of a mother are so high that the Holy Prophet Muhammad
(peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave the glad tidings of
Paradise lying under the feet of the mother.
The need of the hour
is to restore these values in our societies. We just keep on talking
about these important values but it is of no use if we do not reflect
accordingly by implementing in our lives as well. Islam is a practical
religion and it teaches us how to live. We just need to follow the
teachings through our actions.
